Volkswagen Passat History

Following the acquisition of Audi Volkswagen Group in 1964, Volkswagen used new engineering expertise to develop a modern front-wheel drive car with a water-cooled engine, and thus the Passat and Golf (the latter being introduced in 1974) were the first of a new generation of Volkswagens. The first Passat was developed in part from the Audi 80 / Fox and, until 2005, the two shared a story.

During its development phase, the Passat was designated internally as EA400 (Entwicklungsauftrag 400, or “Development Order 400″), and long before its release, the production of Volkswagen Type 3 plant in Wolfsburg had been arrested in order to free up capacity for the new car. Wolfsburg was able to increase production with care: directly before production began Passat lines were used to mount small volumes of car Audi 80 brothers who had begun a year earlier.

Volkswagen Passat Nameplate Etymology

Although many sources suggest the Volkswagen Passat nameplate derives from the German word for trade wind, reflecting the period in the history of Volkswagen when their vehicles after winds and major currents was appointed Volkswagen Golf , Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Bora, and Volkswagen Scirocco, a report of 2013 by former copywriter VW Bertel Schmitt says that after consulting knowledgeable sources, including VW Dr. Carl Hahn, former chief Volkswagen of America and WP Schmidt, former head of sales at Volkswagen – no conclusive evidence suggests that Volkswagen uses a naming theme for his then new front-wheel drive, water cooled vehicles or names etymologically traced to any particular issue or any name system “was never announced, either officially or confidential.”
