The Volkswagen Golf GTE is a plug-in hybrid version of the Golf hatchback unveiled in 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The Volkswagen Golf GTE shares the basic hardware of the propulsion system with theAudi A3 e-tron Sportback, but the software controls are different. The Volkswagen Golf GTE also shares the same plug-in hybrid powertrain with the Volkswagen Passat GTE, but the Volkswagen Passat has a larger 9.9 kWh Li-ion battery.
The Volkswagen Golf GTE is powered by a 1.4 liters (148 hp, 110 kW) petrol engine with direct injection TSI combined with a 75 kW electric motor powered by a 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery, which allows the plug-in hybrid to deliver an all-electric range of 50 km (31 miles) and a total range of 933 km (580 miles). The all-electric mode can be activated by pressing a button. Under the new European driving cycle, the combined fuel economy is 1.50 l / 100 km (157 mpg US) equivalent. The Volkswagen Golf GTE has a top speed of 217 km / h (135 mph) and accelerates from 0-100 km / h (0-62 mph) in 7.6 seconds.
The Volkswagen Golf GTE release to retail customers was scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2014. The first units were recorded in Germany in August 2014. According to JATO Dynamics, a total of 321 units have been registered worldwide until September 2014, the which, 89 units were registered in Germany.
